If you were to rely upon Allah …

𝑺𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒔𝒂𝒚, 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝑰 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒊𝒇 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒆? Yes, it is destined but we’re ordered to strive for it. While it is in our ability to strive, the result lies with Allah; For He is the Razzaq (The Provider) and our Rizq is apportioned by Him alone – He provides to whom He wills, and this authority of provision is reserved for Him alone. But equally, if He should so will, our efforts could be fruitless as a source of test. Still, that doesn’t mean we idly sit by waiting for rizq to fall into our laps or give up. We strive proactively, doing our best, seeking through halal and honest means, relying on Allah to provide.

Consider the birds; as with all creatures, Allah provided for them conditions suited to their existence; He inspired in them to use their given physical form, to take off, fly and land. For even the birds know they must exert effort and rely on Allah as they fly their nests early morning in search of food. So do the bees too have a great task; building honeycombs anywhere from hills to trees. They hunt the nectar of flowers, forming within their bodies honey of different hues, to be stored in the honeycomb’s cells of wax.

Consider the example of Maryam(as), the story of an expectant mother who retreated to a  remote place, where pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree. Alone with no one to attend her, hungry and thirsty. ‘She cried: “Ah! Would that I had died before this! Would that I had been forgotten and out of sight!”’[Maryam, 19:23]. But a voice cried to her from beneath the tree: “Grieve not! for your Lord has provided a water stream beneath you,” [19:24].

She knew now that Allah would deliver her from her hunger and thirst but the Most High wanted her to initiate an action to benefit from His provisions: “And shake towards yourself the trunk of the palm-tree: it will let fall fresh ripe dates upon you.” [Maryam, 19:25]. Now that she fulfilled the physical part of her duties – by shaking the tree, she had to fulfil the spiritual part – trusting Allah for deliverance. Allah’s help was prompt: the fresh dates fell upon her: “So eat and drink and be glad!...” [19:26].
